James Harlan Cleveland (Rhodes 1937)

Relative of 22nd and 24th U.S. President Grover Cleveland.

He found himself on the cutting edge of many ideas, including examining the changing paradigms for global governance and marketplace of the information revolution. He was a journalist, executive editor, and publisher of The Reporter magazine in New York.[3]

President of the University of Hawaii. During his term, Hawaii added a medical school, a law school, and an international astronomy project. He authored many books on leadership and public policy. Hi intellectual pursuits amazed many academic colleagues.

1980 to 1987 - Founding Dean of Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at University of Minnesota.[3]

1965 to 1969 - U.S. Representative to NATO by President Lyndon B. Johnson.[3]

1961 to 1965 - Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs to Secretary Livingston T. Merchant (Acting. University Cottage Club) and Dean Rusk (Rhodes 1931) by President John F. Kennedy / Lyndon B. Johnson.

1956 to 1961 - Dean of Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University

1947, Mr. Cleveland transferred to Shanghai, China to become director of the UNRRA China program. He was appointed as director of the U.S. China Aid program in 1948.[8]

WW2 - 1944, Appointed to manage the Allied Control Commission economic programs in Italy.[8]

1938 - Undergraduate Class of Princeton University.[3]

Note: Son of Harlan Cleveland, who was United States District Attorney in one of President Grover Cleveland’s Administrations. His grandfather, Stanley Matthews, and an uncle, John Marshall Harlan, served on the United States Supreme Court.”.[2]

Blinded in his right eye in a childhood accident, making him ineligible for military service during World War II. His left eye, which was cosmetically perfect, became telescopic.

Harlan is survived by Lois, his wife of 66 years; two daughters, Melantha and Zoe; a son, Alan; and a grandson.
