Larry McDonald

Democrat. Politician. Chairman of the John Birch Society. Davidson College. Emory University.

He was the first U.S. congressman killed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.[2]

3 Jan 1975 to 1 Sep 1983 - Member of U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia’s 7th district.

May 1983 - Larry McDonald appeared on CNN Crossfire with a strong performance.[3]

1982 - Named the John Birch Society’s National Chairman.[13]

1969 to 1974 - Served as a member on the Georgia State Medical Education Board as Chairman.

1964 - It was estimated that the John Birch Society was spending $10 million a year on 7,000 weekly television and radio broadcasts.[2]

1966 or 1967 - Joined the John Birch Society.

1959 to 1961 - United States Navy - Fligh Surgeon (stationed in Keflavik naval base in Iceland). It was in Iceland that McDonald first began to take note of communism. He felt the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavik was doing things advantageous to the Communists; therefore he went to his commanding officer, but was told he did not understand the big picture.[1,1]

Died 1 Sep 1983, Areoplane shot down, killing 269 plus crew. Age 48. Event + 19y9m10d ( 7,223 days )

Note: McDonald admired Senator Joseph McCarthy and was a member of the Joseph McCarthy Foundation. He took the communist threat seriously and considered it an international conspiracy. An admirer of Austrian economics and a member of the Ludwig von Mises Institute, he was an advocate of tight monetary policy in the late 1970s to get the economy out of stagflation, and advocated returning to the gold standard.
