12 Mar 1877 to 7 Mar 1881 - 27th United States Secretary of State by President Rutherford B. Hayes and President James A. Garfield. Succeeded by James G. Blaine (Father to Walker Blaine S&B 1876)
1871 to 1872 - United States at the Geneva court of Arbitration
17 Jul 1868 to 4 Mar 1869 - 29th United States Attorney General by President Andrew Johnson (Freemason). The Senate had rejected Henry Stanbury as Attorney General (who had had an important role in fighting against the veto for the Civil Rights Bill and the Reconstruction Acts.)[1]
1868 - President Andrew Johnson chose Evarts (S&B 1837) to be one of his defence team during his impeachment trial. His four day summation at the end of the trial was considered to have played an important role in obtaining Johnson’s acquittal.[1]
1837 - Graduated Yale, Skull and Bones Patriarch.
Died 28 Feb 1901, from TBC. Age 83.
12 Children … - Sherman Evarts (S&B 1881) - Maxwell Evarts (S&B 1884 ). General Counsel for E. H. Harriman, father of W. A. Harriman (S&B1913) and Edward Roland ‘Bunny’ Noel Harriman (S&B1917) - Allan Wardner Evarts - graduated Yale in 1869 and supported the founding of Wolf’s Head Society and was the first president of it’s Alumni association, a position held for 20 years.
