He was a shy man and had always been treated like a child by his family. He danced gracefully, rode well and spoke good English but his agonised cry when his father died at forty-nine was entirely appropriate: “What is going to happen to me and all of Russia ? I was not prepared to be a Tsar. I never wanted to become one.”[15]

The New York Times was pleasantly suprised that White had accepted the Russian Mission, “which can hardly be regarded as a sepcially important or desirable place for a man of his experience and abilities.”[4]

In the months before he was named minister to Russia, White became involved in several controversies that complicated Russo-American relations. Faced with polifical dissension, the tsar had exiled hundreds of people to Siberia.[4]

Accepted Andrew Carnegie’s invitation to visit California and Mexico.

1890 - Married Helen Magill, daughter of Edward Magill, Swathmore College’s second President. First women in the U.S. to earn a PhD. Magill accompanied her husband when he was appointed to diplomatic posts in St. Petersburg (1892–94) and Berlin (1897–1903). Magill was presented at both courts and was a noted conversationalist, discussing architecture, sculpture, music, and literature with Kaisar Wilhelm II.[12]

At the banquet following the dedication by the Grand Lodge of Virginia of the monument erected to Mary, the mother of Washington, he said he “regarded it as his misfortune that he had never been made a Mason.” At one time there was talk of making him a Mason “at sight” in the Grand Lodge of New Jersey, but it was never accomplished.”[7.1] Some considered Cleveland to be an Illuminati Pawn.
