In 1952, Mr. Bane took on one of the most challenging jobs of his career—attorney for a City Council committee investigating crime following the shotgun slaying of Charles Gross, a Republican ward committeeman.[6] Mr. Bane concluded that the crime syndicate had corrupted parts of the Chicago Police Department. He later resigned from his post after the City Council refused to force police officers to disclose information on their incomes. Mr. Bane felt the data would help prove his contention that officers were taking bribes.[6]
