1935 to 1954, bought the M. M. Davis & Sons boat yard in Solomons, Md, and began themanufacture of custom power boars, including the Cruis-alongs. He turned over the company to its employees on his retirement.[5]
President of the Power Boat Association for three terms and twice won the top prize in power boating, the Gold Cup, with his speedboat Greenwich Folly.[5]

It was used on many early cars, and Mr. Townsend purchased the National Gauge and Equipment Company, which manufactured dashboard panels for autos. Note: Son of Judge William K. Townsend of the United States Court of Appeals and grandson of James Mulford Townsend (S&B 1874), who backed the successful attempt of “Colonel” Edwin Drake to drill the first oil well in the United States in 1859 - he became an early auto-mobile manufacturer.[5]
Son of Townsend (S&B 1874), James Mulford Townsend Jr (S&B 1908) was also in the same year.
