Jaime Torres Bodet
At the time of his death, Dr. Torres Bodet was writing the sixth volume of his memoirs. His other published works included 33 ‘books, including 15 collections of poetry, seven collectibns of essays and six novels.
1948 to 1952 - 2nd Director-General of the UNESCO
Dr. Torres Bodet envisioned UNESCO as a structure to build peace in the minds of men.
And to accomplish that, he frequently stressed, required the training of national experts and the working out of techniques of preparing educational materials adapted to the needs of each country’s educational system.
**In early November, 1952, Dr. Torres Bodet warned the Organization at its seventh general conference in Paris that unless the benefits of education and science were more equally distributed international peace and security would remain fragile …
Less than two weeks later, he shocked UNESCO when, he resigned in protest in Paris when the general conference cut his proposed budget by almost $2,5‐million.**
1947 to 1948 - Mexico’s Foreign Minister
1943 to 1946 - He served as Mexico’s Minister of Education and launched several progratns ‐‐ including nationwide circulating libraries and a new’ system of schools—to improve educational and reading standards,
Born in Mexico City on April 17, 1902, and educated at the University of Mexico, Dr. Torres Bodet became professor of French Literature at his alma mater in 1924. Five years later, he joined the foreign service and served in Mexico’s embassies in Madrid, Buenos Aires and Brussels.
