Shearman and Sterling Partners included John A. Garver (S&K 1875) and James M. Beck, at one time Assistant Attorney-General of the United States.[0]

1873 to 1918 - Co-Founder of Shearman & Sterling (with Thomas G. Sherman who died in 1900), which represented James Fisk (Black Friday 1869), Jay Gould (Leading Ruthless American Railroad deveoper and speculator hated and reviled), Henry Ford, the Rockefeller Family, and Standard Oil.[3]

Jan 1870 to 1873 - Partner in the firm of Field & Shearman.[0]

Managing Clerk in the office of James K. Hill.[0]

Aug 1867 to 1 May 1868 - Law Offices of David Dudley Field and Dudley Field in New York City.[0]

Died 5 Jul 1918, from TBC. Age 74

Notes: Partner was James O. Bloss.[1,6][1,7][1,8] Intimate friends of Bloss and Sterling was James Stillman.[2,3]

James O. Bloss, in his long career as a cotton merchant he was a member of the firms of Gwathmey & Bloss. James O. Bloss & Company and Woodward & Stillman (with James Stillman).[2,1]

Bequest of \(18million to Yale University (\)240 in 2011)

He required Yale to fund “at least one enduring, useful and architecturally beautiful building, which will constitute a fitting Memorial of my gratitude to and affection for my alma mater” and “the foundation of Scholarships, Fellowships or Lectureships, the endowment of new professorships and the establishment of special funds for prizes”—these mandates led to the construction of the Sterling Memorial Library, Sterling Law Building, the Hall of Graduate Studies, and the Sterling Hall of Medicine, and the endowment of the Sterling Professorships.[1,3]
