Carr Van Anda

Journalist. Editor. Ohio University. Corrected a mathematical error in a speech given by Albert Einstein that was to be printed in the Times.[4]

1923 - Fluent in hieroglyphics, he secured near-exclusive coverage of the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter.

15 Apr 1912 - Van Anda reported the sinking of the Titanic at 1:20 am. The New York Times newsroom recieved information about the Titanic SOS via the Marconi wireless station in Newfoundland. Contacting his correspondents in Halifax and Montreal who were able to confirm that the ship’s wireless had fallen silent 30 minutes after the first call for help. He then referenced the newspaper’s detailed news library to discover that other ships had recently reported close scrapes with icebergs in this area. The next morning the newspaper reported on its front page that the ship had sunk, whilst other papers in America where struggling to report the story with incomplete and inconclusive information.[1]

1904 - Adolph Ochs (Owner of New York Times), appointed Van Ada as managing editor.[1]

11 Apr 1898, Van Anda married Louise Shipman Drane. Parents were George Canning Drane and Mary Shipman.

1886 - Appointed Night Editor of the New York Sun.[1]

Died 28 Jan 1945, from Heart Attack after hearing of the death of his daughter (the day before). Age 80.

Note: Julia Blanche Van Anda died 27 Jan 1945, from TBC. Age 57.
