Charles Graydon Poore (S&B 1926)

From his childhood in Mexico, Mr. Poore retained a great affection for that country. At his death, he was finishing work on a project that had engaged his attention for 15 years, a history of the 1846 to 1848 war between the United States and Mexico.
Formerly Book Critic New York Times, Chief Book Critic Harper’s Magazine in 50’s; retired to write.[2]
1945 to 1969 - returned to The Times and resumed his duties as an assistant editor of the Book Review and contributor to Books of The Times.
1942 to 1945 - Major, GSC US Army.[2] His duties took him to Casablanca, Sicily, Naples, England, Belgium and the Netherlands. By the end of 1944, he was Major and civil affairs officer at Allied Headquarters in Paris.[5]
1937 - Began writing reviews for Books of The Times in the daily paper twice weekly.[5]
1936 - Published “Goya: a Biography” (Painter … some disturbing imagery!)
1933 - After writing for a number of departments of The Times, he became an assistant editor of the Sunday Book Review.[5]

Died 26 Jul 1971, from Heart Failure. Age 68.
Mr. Poore is survived by his widow, the former Mary Carter, whom he married in 1930, and by a daughter, Susan, Mrs. Thaddeus Brys of Baton Rouge, La. A son, Charles Poore Jr., who had worked for the I.B.M. World Trade Corporation, pre deceased him.[6] (Died 1960, Age 28-29)
