Hersey lettered in football at Yale and was coached by Ducky Pond, Greasy Neale and the future United States President Gerald Ford (Freemason). He was a team mate of Yale’s two Heisman Trophy winners, Larry Kelley (S&B 1937) and Clint Frank(‘10).

WW2 - Hiroshima - That September, they were among the first Americans to enter Hiroshima after the atomic bombing. McCrary (S&B 1932) US Press-Corps advised journalists not to cover the bombing, because he felt that the American people could not face the reality of the effects of the bombing, but John Hersey (S&B1936) still covered the story in The New Yorker.[8]…”I covered it up, and John Hersey (S&B 1936) uncovered it,’Mr. McCrary (S&B 1932) said years later. ”That’s the difference between a P.R. man and a reporter.[10]
WW2 - 1944 - John Hersey (S&B 1936), covered the war in the Pacific and his many articles included one detailing the heroism of Lieutenant John F Kennedy when his Motor Torpedo Boat was sunk close to the Soloman Islands.[11]
