Eugen Gladstone O’Neill Jr. (S&B 1932)

American Professor of Greek Literature.[2][4]

26 Sep 1950, On the day of his death, Eugen was scheduled to begin teaching three new course that evening at the New School of Social Re-search in New York. Two of the courses were on classical subjects and the third was entitled “Sources of Reason and Unreason in Twentith Century Thought.”[4]

25 Sep 1950, He spent his last evening with friends of long standing. They were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Meyer, who live near-by. Mr O’Neill and Mr. Meyer, who knew each other from pre-college days, had carried their friendly arguments on philosophical subjects onto the lecture platform a few years ago.[4]

Only a week prior to his death he played a leading part in a local melodrama staffed for the benefit of the Woodstock Foundation.[4]

1932 - Graduated Yale, Skull and Bones Patriarch.[1]

Died 26 Sep 1950, from slashed wrist and ankle. Verdict “Suicide”. Age 40.[4]

Note: Only child of Nobel Prize-winning Playwright Eugene O’Neill, who died in 1953, age 65. [4]

The body was discovered just inside of the front door at 1:45pm by Mrs Meyer.[4]

[4] - WOODSTOCK, N.Y., Sept. 25— Eugene O’Neill Jr. was found dead in his cottage here today, with his left wrist and ankle slashed by a razor. The coroner’s verdict was suicide.
