Millard Fillmore (Freemason)

Freemason[6]. Anti-Masonic (before 1832)[6]. Uncle was a Mason[6]. Whig (1832 to 1855) and Know Nothing (1855 to 1856. Started as a Secret Society!). Politician. Lawyer.

Anti-mason at the beginning of the Anti-Masonic period he was one of the most bitter critics of the fraternity which he characterized as “organized treason”. Later in life his views seemed to mellow, for on July 4, 1851, as President, he was present at the Masonic cornerstone laying of the extension of the Capitol in Washington and took part in the exercises, examined the stone, prounced it laid, and said, “The Most Worshipful Grand Master of the District of Columbia will now please examine the stone and see that it is well laid.” In Sept 1872, he attended another Masonic cornerstone laying at the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane. His uncle, Jesse Millard of Michigan, was a Mason.[5]

May 1850, Part of the Compromise of 1850 was the 1850 Fugitive Slave Bill which to provided for the return of slaves who had escaped from one state into another.

20 Sep 1850, The Compromise of 1850, was approved.

The Compromise of 1850 consisted of legislative measures to reconcile the differences existing between the North and South concerning the issue of Slavery in newly formed Territories of California, New Mexico, and Utah. The previous President, Zachary Taylor, had impeded the bill because he opposed the extension of slavery, but the new president agreed with the compromise. The Compromise was designed to avert the threat of dissolution of the Union. It was relatively short lived as the Civil War broke out 10 years later

Mackey’s Encyclopedia of Freemasonry reports that Fillmore is said “to have received the Degrees but afterwards recanted during the Anti-Masonic era in which he was active against the Craft…In his official capacity as President he attended the laying of the cornerstone of the Capitol extension by the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia, July 4, 1851.”[6.1]

It should be noted that only two Whig Party members were elected for the office of President, and both died in office. Succeeded by Whig Party vice-Presidents, neither won a second term. Both times replaced by their Democratic Party.[6.2]
