Benjamin Guggenheim
Mining Magnate
Faced with impending death Mr. Guggenheim and his valet (Rene Pernot) surrendered their lifebelts to a ship’s steward.
“We’ve dressed in our best, and are prepared to go down like gentlemen” and “Please tell my wife I did my best in doing my duty.”
Mr. Guggenheim and his valet were last seen seated in deck chairs sipping brandy and smoking cigars.
Died 14 Apr 1912, sinking of the RMS Titanic. Age 46.
Note: It’s alleged that with the combined wealth and influence of Benjamin Guggenheim, Isidor and Ida Straus and John Jacob Astor they could have been a significant obstacle to the setting up of the Federal Reserve.
