Isidor and Ida Straus
Co-owner of Macy’s. Isidor was a Democrat member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New Yorks’s 15th district (30 Jan 1894 to 3 Mar 1895)
15 Apr 1912 - Isidor declined a lifeboat, saying he wouldn’t board until every woman and child had gotten off the ship. Ida then refused to leave her husband. When her husband urged her to evacuate the ship, she reportedly responded,”We have lived together for many years. Where you go, I go.”
29 Jun 1902 - The Mutual Alliance Trust Company opened for business in New York, there were 13 directors including Emanuel Lehman, William Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Straus[1,9]
Died 15 Apr 1912, sinking of the RMS Titanic. Age 67
Note: Isidor was born 6 Feb 1845, Otterberg, Palatinate then ruled by the Kingdom of Bavaria.
Note 2: It’s alleged that with the combined wealth and influence of Benjamin Guggenheim, Isidor and Ida Straus and John Jacob Astor they could have been a significant obstacle to the setting up of the Federal Reserve.
